I’m that awful person who decides within the first 10 minutes of a Pilot whether I will pursue a series or not — but Netflix’s dark comedy drama ‘Dead to Me’ had me hooked within less that a minute (not exaggerating).

Starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, the show sets off with a widowed woman (Jen Harding) left sardonic and broken after her husbands death sudden death. On an attempt to resolve her issues for the upbringing of her sons, she joins a Grief Group where she meets the sweet and almost innocent, Judy.

For Starters, the characters are strangely lovable in a non-typical way. Jen and Judy are the most depthful and complicated characters I have seen on my screen in a long time. Jen’s mood is inhabited by anger thus loses her patience easily. The amount of deadpan comic relief this woman adds to the show is outstanding as well as her interactions with recently divorced and sensitive, Judy.

Judy begins her unlikely friendship with Jen as she lies about the real reason for joining the grief club. The writer (Liz Feldman) includes captivating twists in every episode as we follow the journey of these two troubled middle-aged women and find out why Judy really joined the group. Both seek answers from each other — Jen wants to find out who ran her husband over and Judy wants to achieve her life-long dream of being a mother. I have to say the final series ends sadly but as I can’t spoil anything — YOU MUST WATCH UNTIL THE END.

‘Dead to Me’ cleverly tackles complications of Motherhood, Grief, Trauma and the complexities of Female friendships. It’s truly rare to find a show which covers such difficult topics in an emotional rollercoaster of laughs and tears, if you have watched Ricky Gervais’s ‘After Life’ then this series has a similar feel in an American setting, of course.

I must admit, the show isn’t lacking in any area — authentic dialogue, characters and interactions which draws you into the journey of these complicated, and perhaps relatable, characters.

Please don’t miss out on this well-crafted series!
